The long-term relevance of NSWRM depends on sustained collaboration between:

  • Policymakers and public authorities

  • Agricultural stakeholders and advisory services

  • Researchers and technical experts

  • Regional planners and water managers

Continued engagement should focus on:

  • Using harmonised indicators and modelling outputs to inform discussion

  • Exploring trade-offs and synergies through scenario-based analysis

  • Promoting transparent data management and documentation practices

  • Encouraging cross-sector dialogue between water, agricultural and climate domains

Supporting NSWRM policy development does not require new institutional mandates. It requires evidence-based dialogue, knowledge exchange and coordination within existing governance frameworks.

By combining scientific rigour, transparent data management and inclusive stakeholder processes, OPTAIN reinforces the conditions necessary for coherent and sustainable NSWRM policy pathways across Europe.

Closing Perspective

NSWRM represent a strategic opportunity to enhance environmental resilience while maintaining agricultural viability. Their success relies on:

  • Coherent policy alignment

  • Transparent and harmonised analytical evidence

  • Active stakeholder participation

  • Continuous knowledge transfer

Through its integrated approach, OPTAIN strengthens the foundation for informed and collaborative policy conversations, supporting sustainable water and land management across diverse European contexts.
