  1. Analytical Assessment of NSWRM

OPTAIN aims to evaluate a wide range of NSWRM across different soil-climatic regions using harmonised modelling approaches at field and catchment scales. Measures are parameterised within hydrological models and assessed under baseline and climate-change scenarios.

  2. Stakeholder Engagement

Multi-Actor Reference Groups (MARGs) support the identification of relevant measures, indicators and contextual constraints. Stakeholder input informs scenario design and interpretation of optimisation results, ensuring regional relevance.

  3. Model-Based Scenario Analysis and Optimisation

Using advanced modelling tools such as SWAT+ (and complementary tools where relevant), OPTAIN simulates water flow, sediment transport and nutrient dynamics under alternative NSWRM configurations. Results are integrated into a multi-objective optimisation framework to identify Pareto-efficient portfolios that balance competing objectives.

  4. Policy Dialogue

The project contributes to evidence-based policy dialogue by providing simulation-based insights into the potential performance of NSWRM under different environmental conditions. These insights may inform strategic planning discussions at regional and European levels.

  5. Knowledge Dissemination

OPTAIN disseminates its modelling framework, optimisation results and analytical tools through its Learning Environment, scientific publications and stakeholder workshops. The focus is on sharing methodological approaches and simulation-based findings rather than on reporting implemented measures.
