The OPTAIN case studies provide analytical illustrations of how harmonized approaches can operate in practice.

In several study areas, retention measures were evaluated against both water quality objectives and agricultural performance indicators. By combining catchment-scale modelling with field-scale analysis, it was possible to assess environmental effects while simultaneously considering production impacts.

Optimisation workflows allowed exploration of:

  • Measure combinations aligned with regional River Basin priorities

  • Trade-offs between nutrient reduction and crop productivity

  • Performance robustness under climate scenario projections

  • Spatial allocation strategies improving cumulative efficiency

Stakeholder engagement processes further supported alignment. Multi-Actor Reference Groups facilitated structured dialogue between water authorities, agricultural representatives and researchers. This dialogue helped interpret modelling outputs within real governance contexts and improved transparency of optimisation criteria.

Importantly, these examples do not represent regulatory action undertaken by OPTAIN. They illustrate how harmonised analytical approaches can support more coherent interactions between policy objectives and territorial planning frameworks.
