Data Management and FAIR Principles

Effective policy support relies on reliable, transparent and accessible data. In the context of Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM), data underpin hydrological modelling, climate scenario analysis, socio-economic assessment and optimisation processes. Without structured data governance, analytical results risk being inconsistent, non-comparable or difficult to interpret.

To address this, OPTAIN integrates data management practices aligned with the FAIR principles: data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Applying FAIR principles does not only improve scientific quality — it strengthens the credibility of analytical evidence supporting policy discussions.

Within the OPTAIN framework, data management is embedded in:

  • The Common Working Environment (CWE)

  • Harmonised modelling workflows (catchment and field scale)

  • Standardised environmental and socio-economic indicators

  • Transparent documentation procedures

  • Structured data pre-processing tools

This approach ensures that modelling inputs, assumptions and outputs remain traceable and comparable across regions.

Importantly, data management within OPTAIN supports analytical consistency. It does not replace official national data reporting systems or regulatory monitoring mechanisms.
