The OPTAIN project generates modelling results, performance indicators, optimisation analyses and governance insights. However, these outputs only gain full relevance when they are clearly connected to European policy objectives.

Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM) operate at the intersection of water protection, agricultural sustainability and climate adaptation. OPTAIN’s analytical framework was therefore designed to align scientific outputs with policy-relevant objectives, without replacing regulatory functions or conducting official monitoring.

This alignment is achieved through:

  • Harmonised catchment-scale modelling (SWAT+)

  • Field-scale soil–water assessments

  • Climate scenario integration

  • Environmental and socio-economic performance indicators

  • Multi-objective optimisation protocols

  • Stakeholder engagement processes

By structuring results in a policy-relevant format, OPTAIN strengthens the analytical bridge between scientific evidence and strategic planning frameworks.
