The OPTAIN (OPtimal strategies to reTAIN and reuse water and nutrients) project is a European research initiative focused on the analytical assessment of Natural Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM) in agricultural catchments. Rather than implementing measures in practice, OPTAIN develops and applies a process-based modelling and multi-objective optimisation framework to explore how different NSWRM configurations may influence water and nutrient dynamics under current and future climate conditions.

The project addresses the need for scientifically robust tools that support structured comparison of alternative NSWRM portfolios across diverse European biogeographical regions. Its contribution lies in providing simulation-based evidence on potential performance and trade-offs between environmental and agricultural objectives.

This section introduces the OPTAIN project, outlining its analytical scope, methodological approach, and strategic objectives.
