Descriptive Fields
The OPTAIN project was initiated in response to growing challenges related to water scarcity, nutrient losses, and climate variability in European agricultural catchments. Funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, the project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of research institutions, public authorities, and stakeholder networks.
Rather than implementing measures in practice, OPTAIN focuses on the development of a harmonised modelling and optimisation framework to analyse Natural Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM) across diverse biogeographical regions. The project’s background reflects a structured research effort aimed at improving analytical tools for assessing water and nutrient dynamics at field and catchment scales.
This section outlines the origins, funding context, and major project phases that structured the development of the modelling framework and associated analytical outputs.
