NFM Measure Specification 3: Leaky Structures (Leaky Dams)

Abstract
Leaky woody dams are natural flood management structures made from logs and branches that mimic fallen trees. They slow floodwater by holding and spreading it onto floodplains without disrupting normal flow, while allowing fish and gravel movement. These dams create diverse habitats and vary in floodwater delay effects. Suitable for headwater streams, they require careful site selection and securing to withstand floods. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent blockage and ensure functionality. Properly placed, they pose minimal impact on farming and require relevant environmental consents.
