Abstract
This case study describes Poland’s nationwide small‑scale water retention programme (1997–2010), which implemented over 4,500 retention measures across rural and forested areas to store around 350 million m³ of water. It highlights benefits in groundwater recharge, flood mitigation, agriculture support, and multiple local economic uses like micro‑hydropower and recreation.
