Abstract
This webpage presents Lake Cerknica—one of Europe’s largest intermittent lakes—describing its flooding cycle (8 months submerged, up to 26 km² when full, vanishing in dry season), karst hydrology, and exceptionally rich biodiversity (half of Europe’s bird species observed, many mammals, amphibians, butterflies, carnivores, carnivorous plants). The text highlights its Ramsar and Natura 2000 importance and long-standing human-nature interaction.
