Public engagement within OPTAIN aims to increase awareness and understanding of the project’s simulation-based assessment of Natural Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRM) and to foster informed dialogue on sustainable water and nutrient management.
Educational outreach activities are designed to translate complex modelling approaches and optimisation results into accessible formats. Through brochures, infographics and explanatory materials, the project communicates the relevance of process-based modelling, scenario simulations, and multi-objective optimisation for analysing NSWRM planning strategies. Content is distributed through communication channels selected according to target audiences, ensuring clarity and accessibility rather than promoting direct implementation.
Workshops and public events provide opportunities to present modelling methodologies and discuss analytical findings in region-specific contexts. These events focus on explaining how NSWRM performance is assessed through simulation and how trade-offs between environmental and economic objectives are analysed. Rather than offering hands-on implementation training, these sessions support understanding of the analytical framework and encourage discussion of planning implications.
Partnerships with local organisations, educational institutions and stakeholder networks help contextualise the project’s modelling results. Collaborating with regional actors enhances the relevance of communication materials and supports informed exchange on how simulation-based insights may inform broader policy and planning discussions.
Structured feedback mechanisms, including surveys and online interaction channels, enable continuous dialogue with the public. Feedback contributes to improving the clarity of communication materials and the usability of the Learning Environment and associated analytical tools. This ensures that engagement activities remain responsive and aligned with stakeholder interests while maintaining scientific accuracy.
Through these strategies, OPTAIN promotes informed understanding of its model-based evidence and optimisation insights, supporting transparent communication and structured dialogue on NSWRM planning approaches without implying operational implementation of measures.
