OPTAIN brings together environmental scientists, modellers, economists and social scientists to develop an integrated framework for evaluating NSWRM planning strategies. The project combines hydrological and nutrient transport modelling, scenario analysis, and multi-objective optimisation to assess the potential impacts of different spatial allocations and combinations of measures.
Stakeholder engagement plays an important role in defining relevant measures, selecting performance indicators, and interpreting optimisation results. Through Multi-Actor Reference Groups (MARGs), local expertise contributes to refining modelling assumptions and contextualising analytical outputs.
Importantly, the project’s findings are derived from model-based simulations, not from field implementation or monitoring of measures.
