Origins and funding (EU Horizon 2020)

OPTAIN is funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, which supports research and innovation addressing societal and environmental challenges. The project officially started in 2020 and was designed to develop scientifically robust tools for analysing NSWRM planning strategies across Europe.

Through this funding framework, OPTAIN developed an integrated methodology combining:

  • Process-based hydrological and nutrient modelling

  • Scenario analysis under current and future climate conditions

  • Multi-objective optimisation of NSWRM portfolios

  • Stakeholder-informed scenario development
