The Green Sponge project is underway in Val di Cornia, an area facing high climate and water vulnerability, with the goal of boosting environmental and social resilience using a "sponge" approach and Nature-Based Solutions. The project blends strategic regional planning with local testing, driving water management that can sustainably absorb, retain, and release water resources. This helps lower flood risks and enhance the ecological health of the environment.

The initiative relies on a structured co-design process that brings together public agencies, technical and scientific experts, community groups, schools, and residents, blending local insights with specialized expertise. At the operational heart of the project is the creation of a Sponge Park at Parco della Tufaia in Venturina Terme. Designed as a showcase, educational hub, and public space, it turns green and blue infrastructure into practical tools for climate adaptation and public awareness.

Location of the project
The coastal Tuscany Cornia River watershed, Italy, spans about 600 km² and features a torrential regime with flood events, extended dry periods, and insufficient urban drainage. These issues result in frequent flash floods. The Cornia River originates from the Metalliferous Hills at an altitude of 875 meters above sea level. The watershed is hydrologically divided into two areas. The headwater catchment, which is forested and experiences higher rainfall. The coastal plain is predominantly agricultural, where the Cornia River has been embanked and rectified. A dense drainage network and secondary channels dominate the plain area, with most of them dry for large part of the year. In the area, Campiglia Marittima, Piombino, and Suvereto are the most important municipalities. Agricultural activities such as cereal, vegetable, and olive cultivation dominate the region. This supports a thriving processing industry that produces high-quality oil, renowned wine, and cash crops.
The lower Cornia valley aquifer system (Tuscany, Italy) provides the only source of water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial purposes, and it also contributes to the water needs of the nearby Elba Island. For 60 years, intensive exploitation of groundwater resulted in consistent head lowering and water balance deficit. This caused subsidence, reduction of groundwater-dependent ecosystems, and salinization of freshwater resources.

Project's objectives
The general objective of GREEN SPONGE is to promote resilience to climate change (to both flood and drought) in the Cornia River watershed by means of co-design processes devising a whole plan based on water related NbSs or hybrid solutions, in line with what proposed by the SPONGEWORKS project and Consortium. In particular, GREEN SPONGE will achieve this general objective by:

- Co-creating a Sponge Strategy for the Val di Cornia basin: the SPONGE TRANSITION PLAN.
- Providing evidence of SpongeWorks concepts to the general public by building a Sponge Park, as a tangible outcome of the co-creation process.
- Promoting river restoration works by providing evidence on the ten-years impacts of existing river restoration works.
- Disseminating SpongeWorks concepts to the professionals, general public and policy makers in Italy and beyond.
